Growing In Grace
Every child from birth is expected to grow. Though growth doesn’t happen over-night, there would be signs of it as the child progresses. No parent would be happy when a child shows no sign of growth or development. This is the same thing in the spiritual birth.
When a man is born anew into the family of God, he is expected to grow in the presence of the Lord and in the new family that he has been born into. He is not expected to be a baby Christian forever, remaining at the same spiritual level at which he started. As earthly parents don’t like it when a child doesn’t grow, so our Heavenly Father is not pleased when any of His children doesn’t grow.
Every Christian is required to grow in the Lord and in His grace. That is God’s desire and command to us His children. This growth is possible when there is a relationship between us and our Heavenly Father who has called us to be His. The Christian grows in the Lord, not outside the Lord. We have two great spiritual tools that ensure this growth.
- The Word
- Prayer
You can’t know the Lord and grow in Him if you don’t study His Word. You can’t have a relationship with a father you don’t communicate with. Prayer is communication with God. Prayer and the Word of God are the two essentials for a binding and growing relationship with God. These two are never to be neglected. Nothing can replace them. Neglecting them is planning for a spiritual failure. Without them our relationship with God will gradually fade, no matter what we profess.
In the physical, if you don’t feed well you are likely to suffer stunted growth, malnourishment and other health issues. Worse it is in the spiritual if you don’t feed on God’s Word. The Word of God is the believer’s spiritual food. As we feed on it we grow. In it we hear from God, get to know Him and His ways. In the Word we receive and enjoy God’s promises unto us.
Prayerlessness is cutting off the lifeline between us and Heaven. When there is this disconnection between us and God, we expose ourselves to the enemy and his wicked devises. The point is, if you are not ready to pray, you are not ready to be a Christian. Jesus is our example. He prayed. If Jesus who was God in the flesh while on earth would pray, how much more we. We need prayer more than He needed it.
Sometimes we allow other things to crowd our daily routine and keep us from the two things that we so dearly need as Christians. Sometimes we are caught up with activities even in the Church and we forsake prayer and the study of God’s Word. When that happens, we become spiritual empty vessels, without the presence and anointing of the Lord.
The Word of God and prayer must be taken very seriously as we journey in the race. Be sure that nothing takes them away from you. Your Spiritual growth and relationship with God depend on them. We must make time daily for these two. Don’t let a day go by without prayer and God’s Word. They keep our bond with the Lord, cementing it stronger as we grow in His presence.
Pray without ceasing. I Thessalonians 5:17
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby. 1 Peter 2:2
