Real Treasures
What are real treasures? Jesus stressed on the great necessity of real treasures when He was on earth. What He said in Matthew 6:19-20 gives us what we need to know concerning treasures that are true and real.
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.
Real treasures are spiritual and eternal. Nothing can harm them or take them away from us. There are stored and recorded in Heaven, the safest place. Unlike real treasures, earthly and material treasures have no lasting value and would be destroyed. For this reason, Jesus commands us to go after real treasures that follow us into eternity.
The life we choose to live here, our relationship with God, our service to Him and His Kingdom are what constitute the incorruptible treasures that we lay up in Heaven. We are called not to live a selfish life or focus on the mundane things of this world, but to live for God and to have our affections set on what is worth it. When you realized the futility of accumulating earthly riches and treasures and how short-lived they are, you will wisely live for the things that are true and everlasting.
We should not chase wealth as if our lives depend on it. Our lives and satisfaction depend only on God. Remember the rich young fool that filled his barn, made merry with satisfaction and told his soul to relax and enjoy. He didn’t live to see the following morning. He was separated by the wealth he accumulated. It was left for others and he entered eternity empty-handed with no true treasure attached to his name. He would have no reward from God and no part in the Kingdom that he rendered no service to. Let’s not be like him.
Set your affections on things above. Colossians 3:2 says you should “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Your actions and lifestyle show where your affections are. If the Lord has blessed you in earthly riches, use it for His Kingdom, and you can only do so when your affections are set above. Be quick in blessing others and in working for God with whatever He has given you. Don’t accumulate. Don’t deny help and service. Don’t despise those you should help. One thing about serving God with our substances is that we always receive more than we put in and we never lack. You can’t out-give God. Luke 6:38 says: Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over, shall men give into your bosom.
Heaven is taking account of your deeds. Your service to God, your service to His Kingdom and to others would never go unnoticed. Store treasures for yourself in Heaven. Verse 21 of the same Matthew 6 says: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Serve and love God with all you have. Lay up treasures for yourself in Heaven. When your treasures are in Heaven, there would your affections and heart be. There also would your eternal reward be. Labour for the real and true treasures.
